In his IRCAM office in Paris, French composer and conductor Pierre Boulez received the ICMA trophy for the CD set ‘Ballets Russes’ on Melodiya. Penderecki Voted Honorary Citizen of Krakow

The City Council of Krakow, Poland, has unanimously voted in favour of granting Honorary citizenship to the composer Krzysztof Penderecki, winner of ICMA’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012. A special ceremony is to be held after the summer holidays, before the composer’s 80th birthday in November. The City Council described Penderecki as one of the symbols of Krakow’s cultural life, recalling his support for the foundation of the chamber orchestra ‘Sinfonietta Cracovia’ as well as his contribution to the success of the European Capital of Culture festival in Krakow in 2000. Penderecki has lived for a long time in Krakow. Past recipients of Krakow’s honorary citizenship include Ronald Reagan, Margaret Thatcher, Zbigniew Brzezinski, Lech Walesa, Czeslaw Milosz and Wisława Szymborska.

ICMA at Classical:NEXT in Vienna

The second edition of Classical:NEXT takes place from today, 29 May until 1 June in Vienna, Austria. After a successful premiere in Munich last year, the new professional forum for classical music is set to become the annual meeting point for the classical music scene. The new venue for the Classical:NEXT exhibition and conference spaces is the MAK, the Austrian Museum of Applied Arts/ Contemporary Art, in Vienna. The Showcase concerts will be held at nearby theatres.

A rich program of showcases and conferences is organized for this exhibition. ICMA President Remy Franck will chair the panel discussion ‘Signposts in the Jungle – How important are reviews and awards for the music industry?’ on Thursday, 30.5.2013 from 14:00-14:45.

ICMA HOST PERFORMED MAHLER’S EIGHT SYMPHONY

Bilkent Symphony Orchestra of Ankara, which will host the ICMA Award ceremony and Gala concert on 28 March, 2015, has performed the Ankara premiere of Mahler’s 8th Symphony. The performance on 30 April was the closing concert of the 30th Ankara International Music Festival. The Bilkent Symphony, conducted by music director Isin Metin shared the big stage of the Congresium Hall in Ankara with choruses from Poland and Portugal and a distinguished line of soloists, some 400 players and singers in total.
